This was our first live performance since Broadway shut down in March 2020, and Kathryn Gallagher exceeded our expectations. It was a beautiful night under the lights at Tavern on the Green - an excellent venue for intimate concerts. Kudos to TodayTix for putting on this Broadway concert series the summer before shows reopen.
Jagged Little Pill was the last Broadway musical we saw in 2020, and we often found ourselves listening to the music this past year - even choosing the musical over the original Alanis album. One reason is undoubtedly because of Gallagher's performance, and when I saw she was doing a concert I knew we had to be there. Gallagher knows she writes sad songs, but she balanced that mood with relaxed comedic banter. She acknowledged the pandemic without making it a focus, aware that this was most people's first time back to a live performance. And the audience seemed to not only accept but also to appreciate her casual presence - forgetting lyrics, tuning her guitars, saying hi to her brother in the audience. Everyone was clearly just happy to be there, listening to the music. And the music is great - Gallagher has a powerful voice and range, and her songs have a classic yet original singer/songwriter feel. This performance was one night only, but keep an eye out for Kathryn Gallagher, and go see her in Jagged Little Pill when it re-opens! |
